Adopting shelter dogs as therapy dogs for prison inmates for the purpose of rehabilitation
This is not an new idea. The only inmates excluded are those who have been convicted of violence against animals or sexual assault.
Bringing rescue dogs and prisoners together in a remarkable rehabilitation is something Malaysia can explore.
Rescue dogs
Often, when dogs are rescued, they are hurt emotionally and do not trust human easily. They have been abandoned, betrayed and left to die. Most of these rescue dogs are too old or too sick, and many would be euthanize or going to be put under.
These dogs benefit from the training and attention they receive from the inmates after being in a shelter or on the streets. The inmates not only learn to train the dogs, but they learn life skills that help them when they are released from prison. They know they are preparing their dog for a better life because of their love and attention, but what they may not realize, is that the dogs are providing comfort and companionship to them too. Dogs can rehabilitate these human beings.
Dogs are known to be empathetic and will be able to help rehabilitate these prison inmates, social outcasts back into society.
