Does mesh improve the speed or just improve connectivity?

I was using Tenda AC18 + Tenda A9 (wifi extender), was getting 10–30mbps on 2nd floor which was way lower than my 300Mbps plan.
Just like you said, you will actually need a corresponding router to support the ISP speed.
