We share 98% of our DNA with the chimpanzees, yet we are still hung up on who is Malay and Non-Malay.

There is a broad consensus across the biological and social sciences that RACE is a social construct, not an accurate representation of human genetic variation. Humans are remarkably genetically similar, sharing approximately 99.9% of their genetic code with one another.

There is no such thing as Malay and Non-Malay anymore. How do you separate one Malay from a Non-Malay when the younger generation has one Malay parent and another from a Non-Malay parent? How do you call one chinese when the “chinese” cannot speak chinese but only Bahasa and English?

Now, every Malaysians can speak fluent Bahasa. Let us not forget the history of Malaysia. Every Malaysians have contributed to the founding and building of Malaysia.

Fact is, there are hundred of thousands of early Chinese and Indians were already here in Malaya longer before anyone else came. Histories have been recorded of this existence as was demonstrated by Baba Nyonya from the 1500. Since 1800, there are many miners who are ethnically chinese and hundreds others who were Indians who left their home country to call Malaya their home. They are as Malaysians as we all are now. Like every Malaysians, they came for trade and for work opportunities, just like the Malays in the land. Just like the Non-Malays who left emigrated from Malaysia in recent years due to one man’s policy that we have to be reminded that he is so kind, he allowed us citizenships. (We know if he has anything to do with it, he would not have given us citizenship. Luckily, we had Tunku Abdul Rahman, a great man who saw the danger of this man, Tun M and fired him from his party)

Even the British made note of this and the fact that the Malay peninsula was multiracial in every sense of the word and every Malaysians are respectful of the Malay Sultanates when they arrived. Nobody has any problems with recognising the Sultanates.

It was only when disputes arose during the drafting of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia that some men took ‘extra’ interest in their rights post-independence. They took advantage as this was their one ticket to riches and power. Their families are now worth Billions and yet average Malaysians do not understand that their false narrative of engineered to keep us divided, is keeping them in power to loot more from our country Malaysia.

Malaysia has been founded by combining Malaya (Tanah Melayu) with Sarawak and Sabah, which are full of Non-Malays. Everyone of us have had the chance to build and found this new Malaysia. Yet, for so long, their efforts were not recognised. Politicians like this man did not recognise Non-Malays as the “founders and builders” of Malaysia.

To not accept this and to bulldoze ahead with false narratives under the pretext that “you are just not part of us” is an insult to all Malaysians and Malays and a form of discrimination, to say the least.

When the certain individuals refuse to recognise the role of the early Non-Malays and strive hard to ‘rewrite’ history in ways that diminish that role, it is wrong for facts to be twisted for as long as it had.

At a point in time, it was a trend for a large number of Non-Malays to intermarry with the Malays, and the practice was cut short by one man who instilled fear and prohibition that Non-Malays must convert to Islam to marry the Malays. It will be incumbent upon us to keep reminding the younger generation of this moment in history. How nice it would have been now that after 66 years that we are all Malaysians, not Malay, not Non-Malay, just Malaysians of different cultures. United.

Such reminders aren’t divisive, but a necessity and the birthright of all Malaysians so as to prevent Malaysia from being trodden on by unscrupulous individuals with hidden agendas.

Malaysia is truly Asia.
